NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly after his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will continue to reside within me and my work," he added.
In his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a famous family.
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his humble Astoria apartment.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
