Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir next month titled Notes from a Cell, detailing his time spent in custody.
The revelation was made shortly after the ex-leader gained freedom as he contests the guilty verdict related to unlawful coordination connected to efforts to obtain political financing linked to the regime of the late Libyan dictator.
“Inside jail visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he writes in a preview, implying the book centers around his thoughts during seclusion rather than a broader observation of the overcrowded and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.
“Quiet is absent, not present at the prison, where one hears endless commotion,” he adds. “The racket unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world grows stronger in prison.”
While appealing for release, Sarkozy was present via screen from his cell, characterizing his incarceration as draining. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this nightmare tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”
“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It has an impact every inmate as it’s exhausting.”
The former president, the ex-head of state between 2007 and 2012, was the first former head from the EU and the first postwar leader from France to experience jail.
Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he would use his time for authoring a memoir.
It remains unclear whether he had time to go through the texts he took into prison: a biography of Jesus in two parts plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, in which a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail later flees to take revenge.
Sarkozy was held in isolation to protect him in a room of about nine sq metres including private facilities in the Paris jail located in the capital. Security personnel stayed in the next cell.
Sources mentioned that he consumed solely dairy snacks in prison due to concerns meals provided might have been spat on. Options were available to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, as per accounts. Not known is if he will detail meals during incarceration.
His attorney, who saw him regularly each day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings he would be safer released than inside. “He received menacing messages, has heard screaming during nighttime and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”
His incarceration began last month after the judiciary imposed a half-decade term for illegal collaboration over a scheme to secure political donations for his presidential bid.
He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, and a fresh trial set for early next year.
