The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
Given that the creative staff are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
