Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
