When I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and being named best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
At Monaco, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
