Pope Reinforces Status to England's Number Three Spot with Strong 90 Against Lions

It is tough to gauge how significant of England's preparatory fixture will prove important when their Ashes campaign begins a short distance away at Perth Stadium on the coming Friday – a brief gap in space or time but worlds away in importance and atmosphere – but if it managed only boosting Pope's self-belief, that alone has made the effort worthwhile.

England's No 3 – that much is certainly completely established – followed his initial innings century by adding an additional 90 in the second innings, and the most impressive was not so much the total of runs but the manner in which they were accumulated. On occasion the young batsman seemed commanding, smashing a twelve boundaries and a two of maximums, hitting the ball sweetly but with fierce purpose.

This was merely a friendly versus a Lions team that deployed a total of 11 pitchers throughout a match staged in before a few dozen of onlookers in a local ground, but it was nonetheless hugely noteworthy. To note, the England team, chasing of 202 after the Lions ended their follow-on innings on 251 for six, won by five wickets once Smith hurried the team across the winning target with a stream of fours and sixes.

Joe Root scored a further 31 runs but was not entirely convincing during England's preparatory.

Zak Crawley and Duckett, the two other big first-innings' performers, both were dismissed in the second innings, while Joe Root made additional runs – 31 on this occasion – but was not enormously more convincing, prior to being puzzled and subsequently out by Jacks. Harry Brook experienced an similar end soon afterwards.

Shoaib Bashir – who finished the match having bowled 12 overs for both teams – will have faced some of the hitting he confronted quite challenging. His opening six overs versus the Lions conceded 56, with McKinney taking advantage to pitching that if not exactly poor was surely not overly threatening.

At the end the sixth over of those deliveries, England's remaining three bowlers had conceded roughly the equivalent amount of points – 57 – from 15, though the bowler grew a somewhat less giving later on, conceding 27 from his final six. He secured a single wicket, holding a clever, low grab, falling to his right, to finish Bethell's knock for 70, facing 80 deliveries.

Jacob Bethell, redeeming achieving merely three runs in the first innings, was among a trio of fifty-scorers in the Lions' leading batsmen. McKinney's performances from opening batsman were steadier than those of their number three: he scored 66 in their first batting effort and improved by two in their second innings, facing 61 balls to reach his half-century, with five and a couple maximums, the pair from Bashir's deliveries. Jacob Bethell reached 68 before a poor shot to Ben Stokes at cover, who held a bending grab at low down.

Jordan Cox showed like steadiness, and backed up his initial innings' 53 with an additional 57, at slightly more than a scoring rate of one. He produced some outstandingly beautiful hits on the way, such as a straight hit and a pull shot against back-to-back Brydon Carse balls to achieve his 50 runs.

Having missed the opening day of this match with a stomach upset and made merely the smallest of efforts to the second, Brydon Carse pitched excellently when eventually afforded the shot, with McKinney and Cox part of his three wickets.
