In November 2024, English number 10 Ford appeared disappointed during the match.

Ford had been summoned from the bench to assist the home side close out an historic victory versus the All Blacks, yet was unable to score a late penalty along with a drop-kick while his team fell short by a narrow margin.

After those expensive errors, Ford needed to put in effort to secure another chance to achieve success for England.

He saw just 25 minutes of action throughout the Six Nations tournament but a string of excellent displays, notably in the summer matches versus Argentine and American teams when the Smith players had departed for Lions tour commitments, put him firmly back among starting candidates.

At 32 years old not only repaid the coach's trust in starting him versus New Zealand, but the Sale Sharks playmaker delivered a player-of-the-match performance to support the home team to a first win against the All Blacks in their own stadium for the first time since 2012.

The decisive instant occurred as Ford successfully executed back-to-back drop-goals just before the break.

This assisted England overcome a 12-0 deficit to reduce the margin to 12-11 at the break, ahead of the manager's skilled reserves once more performed during the final period to support England to a convincing 33-19 triumph.

"Recognition should be offered to the experienced players within our side, notably George," Borthwick told. "That period when he converted those crucial kicks, he directed play absolutely brilliantly.

"Last year I thought George substituted and competed exceptionally well [versus the All Blacks].

"A attempt hit the upright and he had a pressured drop-kick, but he played really well.

"He's an exceptional captain, a brilliant player and an even finer individual. We are honored to include him in our squad."

Drop-goals 'always in the plan'

Ford preparing for a kick

In 2024, Ford's misses in kicking came at a price as England lost by the All Blacks - however it proved a different story during the match.

The Kiwis commenced strongly at Allianz Stadium, building a 12-point lead via touchdowns by Fainga'anuku and Taylor.

Subsequent to Ollie Lawrence's powerful finish, Ford's back-to-back three-pointers resulted in the home side returned to the locker room with psychological advantage.

"The challenging thing at those times occurs as the display indicates a twelve-point deficit, we can stick to our strategy and our convictions the best way to compete is," Ford stated.

"We fought our way back into contention and we understood should we begin the final period strongly, with the bench coming on, we were in an advantageous spot.

"Despite having a quarter-hour remaining, we found ourselves on our own line with a yellow card, meaning we faced difficulties during that phase also.

"I believe this illustrates elite competition requires - who can deal in those circumstances superiorly."

Both kicks occurred within a two-minute span while the number 10 who successfully converted three drop-goals in a win facing the Argentine team at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, showed all his century of caps experience.

Ford successfully executed two drop-kicks with Sale in a league contest occurring during difficult conditions versus Bath - this demonstrates a talent he has mastered thoroughly.

"These attempts is always in the plan," Ford added.

"The coach is such a phenomenal leader that he consistently in my ear about it, and appropriately since three points is valuable during any phase of competition."

Ford directed his team superbly around the field all game, making smart decisions - both to compete and locating gaps in the opposition's territory.

His trademark high spiral kick further confused Beauden Barrett, who couldn't collect.

Following his start in the English victory against Australia in early November, Ford handed over the number 10 jersey to Fin Smith during the Fiji match a week later.

But the biggest test theoretically this season was presented by the multiple World Cup winners, and Ford reclaimed his starting role.

The national side, currently enjoying 10 straight wins, face Argentina this month and curiosity remains to discover if Borthwick goes back with the alternative or persists with Ford.

Regardless of the selection, Ford established ahead of the next tournament from a World Cup that there is plenty of career ahead in him.
