Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
