He fought justice and the legal system prevailed.
Sixty days subsequent to getting a 27-year sentence for trying to “destroy” the nation's democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now appears headed to prison.
The convicted instigator – who's been subject to house arrest in his estate while a set of judicial steps and appeals proceed – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, amid mounting rumors that he will be transferred to a well-known high-security prison.
During Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the conservative ex- paratrooper exhibited minimal mercy for the country's jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we provide these dirtbags a easy time?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be screwed, end of story. That's my opinion.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to finish there, you simply need is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”
Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, four of whom this week toured the facility in an apparent effort to prevent the supreme court from banishing him there.
Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, said he predicted the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal problems – the outcome of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He will not be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It could be awful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the condition of prison meals.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells holding 40 detainees: “That is almost one square meter per detainee.
“We talked to the inmates and they grumble, naturally, of the awful food,” continued the senator.
The senator isn't the lone figure speaking out before the former president’s predicted imprisonment.
Authoring in a prominent publication, a different supporter, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and claimed Brazil was about to see “the largest unfairness in its record”.
“This is an unfairness that eats away the hearts of millions people in Brazil,” he stated.
This could be true due to the substantial backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his anticipated jailing has also warmed the feelings of many other people who believe he ought to be imprisoned for planning to stop the elected leader from assuming office – and additionally plotting to have him murdered.
Reimont Otoni, a politician for the current administration's allied group, said: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to get respectful care – but respectful care while incarcerated. He can’t carry on being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”
He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the tough treatment of prisoners, had abruptly become aware to their entitlements. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly asserted that civil liberties should not be for lawbreakers – chosen to tour a jail to find out what situations are truly like,” he stated.
“The former president is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, insulting treatment”.
Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently houses about thousands of prisoners, his probable assigned facility looks to be a close prison for officers and other “special” prisoners called Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are considerably more adequate than those in the primary facility, although still a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro had while occupying the impressive leader's home, about a short distance away.
Based on sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – approximately the area of two parking spaces – and features a 12 square meter bathroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre veranda. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a television and even a minibar in his room as long as they were provided by his family,” information indicated.
The lawmaker denounced the talked-about idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his fate in the {
