People have come together across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader added on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
The national leadership delayed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.
Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams met in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the talks said that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.
The official explained the morning session ended without tangible results, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not produce any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the differences between the two sides.
In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person return no one will be secure."
"Once we see all home once more, we can relax again. Then we can start to recover," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to finish in as payment for the freedom of the captives.
At the location of the gathering, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"Once the night falls, the fear appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, explained.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my smallest child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we check the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis said another two fatalities had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, medics stated.
