Iran's military claims to have hit a American military facility in Bahrain, as Iran launched operations across the region in retaliation for a large-scale and continuing assault targeting the nation by the US and Israel.
Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an zone near the command center of the American Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The extent of any destruction is not yet known and the United States has yet to issue a statement.
Elsewhere across the region, the UAE, the State of Qatar and the State of Kuwait - each hosting American military installations - reported they have shot down incoming projectiles in their air space.
In Doha, the Qatari Ministry of Defence said it had successfully engaged several missiles seemingly aimed at the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the Middle East.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard declared it was attacking American facilities and interests as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in reprisal for the offensive on Iran initiated by the United States and its ally Israel on Saturday morning.
That initial attack - initiated at approximately 09:15 Iran time - has so far struck areas associated with the Tehran's leadership, with US President Donald Trump calling on the people of Iran to revolt against the leadership.
In the State of Israel, sirens were heard nationwide after the Israel Defense Forces said it had identified an barrage of missiles from Iran.
The defence ministry of the United Arab Emirates said in a statement that the country has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".
"UAE air defence systems dealt with the projectiles with notable success and destroyed a number of missiles," the statement continued.
It said debris landed in a populated district in Abu Dhabi, causing some material damage and fatalities.
The United States Air Force is stationed at the Al Dhafra base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the UAE Air Force.
