In Such Poor Health Walking Was Impossible As a Stranger Virtually Carried Me to the Toilets.

Back when I was 19 years old, my regular journey to work was on an crowded coach. The vehicle was always crowded and would always be standing room only by the time I boarded.

On one specific day, I started experiencing quite nauseous when the coach swayed around every turn. I kept telling myself to persevere another few kilometres before the bus arrived at my destination, so I could then rush hurriedly toward the most convenient public restroom to be sick.

As we neared the road leading to my stop and it dawned on me I wasn’t going to hold on. In an instant, it seemed a veil came over me. The world became blank and silent; like someone had muted everything. My mind raced, “I am about to pass out”.

Luckily I was toward the front of the bus, allowing me to take several steps to ask the driver and asked the driver to open the doors, explaining to him I was going to get ill. The driver opened the doors and I weakly exited out onto the street.

I was resolved to not get sick in view of multiple lanes of cars, so I forced myself up and started trying to make my way across to the park opposite the street, where I believed it would allow me to secretly conceal myself among some shrubs to throw up. However I apparently blacked out. I was aware of my physical self, yet walking was impossible and my vision was blurry, so I started crawling towards the grassy area.

“Everything alright, love?”

Right then, I was lifted up. I sensed an arm around my waist and a man’s voice asked, “Everything alright, love?” I managed to tell the kind passerby that I needed to vomit. Therefore, he almost carried me over to a nearby building and placed me inside the women’s restroom. He wanted to know if I needed him to stay with me but I refused.

Not long after, I regained my composure to the point of sitting on the toilet when from beyond the stall I heard his voice asking, “Are you OK, love? Is there anything you require?” I wasn’t able to get up at that moment but did manage to say thank you and shortly thereafter regained the function of my legs. I got myself home and then spent the following days recovering from what turned out to be a nasty tummy bug.

I never glimpsed the stranger’s face – merely his legs and a large container for tools he had with him – yet he rescued me, when I was completely helpless.

Frequently, society can make you self-protective, pushy, and rivalrous. His act was the type of kindness that undoes that hardening of the heart. He demonstrated that people’s natural inclination is towards kindness, a quality I adore about humanity.
