Per new allegations from a informant, Ghislaine Maxwell, now completing a 20-year prison term for sex-trafficking crimes, is allegedly readying a clemency request for consideration by the presidential administration.
House Democrats on the House judiciary committee announced that a source provided information indicating the inmate is preparing the clemency petition. Additionally, they mentioned she has been given preferential conditions at the federal prison camp in the Lone Star State.
Congressman Jamie Raskin, the ranking member on the committee, stated in a news release that the facility's chief was assisting Maxwell with copying, printing, and sending documents to support her bid for clemency.
The exact content of the clemency request remain unclear, Raskin added.
The representative claims that, per the insider, the prisoner has been given specially prepared food that are hand-delivered to her cell, and the warden has individually organized private meetings for Maxwell and her guests.
These meetings allegedly include a “special cordoned-off area” for visitors and a variety of food and drinks for her associates.
Maxwell’s visitors were also reportedly permitted to bring computers, which the congressman characterized as an exceptional measure given the security risk and chance of unsupervised contact.
In one alleged instance, when communications failed for other prisoners, she was provided directions about instructing her contacts to call and how staff would relay the call to her.
The source also allegedly told congressional members that when the convict wanted to examine and modify papers “quickly”, she reportedly employed the warden as her private aide.
The news release states that Maxwell’s correspondents would send files directly to the supervisor, who would hand them over to the inmate, who would review and edit them and return them to the official to scan and provide to the original sender.
Other privileges allegedly granted to Maxwell include time to “play with” a trainee assistance dog – a benefit not “ordinarily allowed” – as well as private after-hours access to the prison exercise area.
Her legal counsel did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the whistleblower’s claims.
In a statement, the presidential office said that it “does not comment” on potential clemency requests.
“Per the President's remarks, granting clemency to Ghislaine Maxwell is not something he has thought about,” the representative noted.
Over the weekend, reports surfaced that she told friends and family in electronic messages that she was “much happier” at the new prison than her former location.
In August, Maxwell was transferred from a low-security prison in Florida's capital to the less restrictive prison in the state, where most inmates are serving time for financial and non-violent crimes.
This move, which experts described as “unprecedented”, occurred just shortly following she was interviewed about the Epstein case by the senior justice official, Todd Blanche, who also once acted as Donald Trump's personal lawyer.
That interview came as the Trump administration was facing increasing scrutiny to release more documents related to the Epstein investigation and amid intense speculation around the President's own personal ties to the fallen billionaire and convicted sex offender, who was found deceased in custody in 2019 while facing trial on trafficking accusations.
In the news release, the congressman also revealed that he had sent a letter to the President, demanding answers about the whistleblower’s allegations, and called on the president to reject the clemency appeal.
“You should not grant any form of clemency to this convicted and unrepentant criminal,” the representative stated in the document. “Your Administration should not be providing her with personal amenities, with puppies to play with, with federal law enforcement officials waiting on her every need, or with any special treatment or facility benefit at all.”
The congressman asked that Blanche attend a open legislative session to discuss the revelations and also posed three questions to the President.
Raskin asked whether Trump had discussed a potential commutation for the convict with the official or others, whether he had instructed Blanche or anyone else to provide Maxwell with the move or special conditions in detention, and whether Maxwell, her lawyers, family or representatives have made any promises to the President or his attorneys.
Raskin has asked for a response to the questions by 24 November.
In October, the nation's highest court rejected an appeal from the convict on her sex-trafficking conviction.
