Individuals from both sides of the political aisle and the Hollywood world are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police have since announced the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial sum.
The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
“What a disgusting and despicable statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
A number of GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health within families.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared members in his party to defend the comments.
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of another political figure.
Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
