Federal Authorities Cuts Back US Air Travel as Shutdown Stretches On

Amid the historic federal government shutdown stretches toward day 38, US skies will become a little less busy. This doesn't apply for US terminals.

Protective Actions Implemented

The federal aviation regulatory body stated flight numbers are being lowered to maintain air traffic control safety during the federal government funding lapse, setting a new duration record and with no apparent progress of a resolution between Republicans and liberal officials to end the federal budget standoff.

Airline regulators selected “high-volume markets” where the FAA says air traffic must be reduced by 4% by early morning Eastern Time on Friday, a move that would force airlines to call off thousands of journeys and create a series of scheduling problems and hold-ups at key American travel hubs.

Government Commentary

The federal transportation leader, Sean Duffy, wrote on online platforms Thursday that the move was “unrelated to political motives” but rather “involving evaluation the data and reducing building risk in the system as flight directors continue working without pay”.

“Air travel remains secure today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the proactive actions we are taking,” Duffy stated.

Airline Cutbacks

Experts predict hundreds if not thousands of flights may be scrapped. These reductions might account for as many as 1,800 flights and upwards of 268,000 seats total, based on an estimate by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Impacted Locations

The involved terminals spanning over 25 states include the most trafficked across the US – including Atlanta, North Carolina's city, Colorado's hub, Dallas/Fort Worth, Florida destination, California gateway, Florida hotspot and Bay Area airport. In some of the biggest cities – including New York, Texas city and Chicago – various airports will be affected.

All three airports serving the Washington DC area – IAD, BWI and Ronald Reagan Washington national – will be affected, inevitably causing delays and cancellations for government officials as well as additional passengers.
