The American administration has criticized the administration in Caracas over the fatality of a jailed political dissident, labeling it a "stark reminder of the despicable essence" of President Nicolás Maduro's regime.
Alfredo DĂaz was found dead in his cell at the El Helicoide prison in Caracas, where he had been incarcerated for over a year, as stated by human rights organisations and dissident factions.
The Venezuelan government said that the man in his fifties displayed symptoms of a heart attack and was taken to a hospital, where he died on Saturday.
This recent intervention from the US is part of an growing war of words between the Trump administration and President Maduro, who has claimed America of attempting regime change.

He noted that DĂaz had only been permitted one visit from his child during the entire length of his imprisonment. He also mentioned that 17 detained dissidents have lost their lives in the country since that year.
Opposition groups have also condemned the administration over the death of the former governor.
MarĂa Corina Machado, a leading dissident figure who received this period's Nobel Peace Prize but who is in concealment to escape capture, commented that DĂaz's death was part of a pattern.
"Unfortunately, it contributes to an alarming and painful series of fatalities of detained dissidents held in the aftermath of the post-election crackdown," she said.
The opposition alliance declared that DĂaz "was an unjust death".
His own party, Democratic Action (AD), also paid tribute to the ex-leader, noting he had been unjustly detained without proper legal procedure and had been kept in situations "that infringed upon his basic rights".
Frictions between the United States and Venezuela have become ever more tense over what Trump has called actions to curb the flow of narcotics and immigrants into the US.
Maduro has for his part alleged the US of using its anti-narcotics campaign as an pretext to depose his regime and access Venezuela's enormous crude oil deposits.
The United States has also stationed a large fleet—its biggest presence in the area in many years—along with numerous troops.
