Wilfried Nancy stated he was not afraid of losing his job, claiming, “The team is really close to things turning around,” in the wake of edging perilously close to the exit with a heavy setback against their arch-rivals.
The Hoops had led Rangers at half-time but a collapse after the break let the Gers to pull level on points with the defending league title holders. Nancy, who was hired from the MLS, has now been in charge for six defeats in eight matches.
“The board and I are united at the club,” stated the manager.
Pressed on the speculation, the 48-year-old replied: “I don’t think about it. I think about finding ways to help my team to be good on details.
Hundreds of supporters made their feelings clear – directed at the hierarchy – by protesting at full time. The hierarchy would be most likely to re-appoint the former boss, who enjoyed a successful caretaker period last year, if Nancy departs.
“The outcomes [that leads to pressure]. And that’s the truth for the moment. Yet in stating that’s how it is, I am not saying that I am pessimistic. Not at all. My point is we are on the cusp, really, really close to turn things around.”
Nancy continues to cling to the fact the side show good levels for one half at a time. In fact, but for wastefulness in front of goal they could have been greater than 1-0 up. “The performance had merit other than the fact that we haven’t scored a second goal,” he said. “I know that we lost, but it's important to stay fair.
“The standard we had at stages was exceptionally high. That happened. I wouldn't talk like that if it was different. Therefore, when it comes to wins, I mentioned we've seen this before. For that reason I feel we are nearly there to getting it right. But for the moment: details, details, details.”
“There were a lot of encouraging signs that we did, as was the case today. But now is performing for 90 minutes. My message would change the same. That’s why I am convinced we’re going to be able to get back on track.”
Rangers manager refused to contemplate a serious challenge even after what felt like a huge result. “Step by step, and we can gradually build momentum,” he said. “The confidence in the group is excellent.”
