Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
