At least 13 people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
