Arteta Fears Fitness Woes Could Hinder Arsenal's Trophy Hunt

Mikel Arteta has expressed concern that his team's pursuit for honors this season is being threatened by a concerning circle of injuries and a grueling schedule.

Key midfielder Declan Rice missed the Champions League trip to Belgium due to sickness. In addition, forward Leandro Trossard and defender William Saliba remain unavailable.

There was, however, better news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian forward registered to their European squad. He replaces the hurt youngster Max Dowman, who suffered an ankle problem.

"Practice, no because we don't have time to train. But clearly the fact that you are without players, you are placing demands on other players more, there's a knock-on effect to that and it's a really vicious cycle."

Dowman's issue is the most recent in a long series of fitness problems for the North London side. Since the start of last campaign, they have suffered 95 player absences, the second-most total in the Premier League.

Extended Absentees

• Defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhães are unlikely to return until 2025.
• Midfielder Kai Havertz continues to rehabilitate from knee and "requires more time," according to the manager.

Arteta rejected the idea that training intensity were to culprit, citing a shortage of opportunity for sessions. He highlighted the strain on available players, some of whom have played over 150 matches in two seasons.

Transfer Strategy

Despite a significant summer investment exceeding £250 million, Arteta stated the team is unlikely planning to enter the January transfer market.

"At the moment we're just focusing on bringing the players back and with luck it will be a question of a short time," he said. "We know how important those weeks are going to be."

Next Challenge

The team experienced their initial defeat in 18 games at the hands of Aston Villa, cutting their lead at the top of the Premier League to two points.

Attention now turns to the Champions League, where a sixth consecutive group-stage win would virtually guarantee a knockout phase finish. Winger Gabriel Martinelli could create a club record by scoring in a fifth consecutive Champions League match.

"The team is disappointed with the outcome, but we have to move forward," he said. "It's not like everything is going badly because we lost one game. So we stick together."
