Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at 89 Years Old.

This Oscar-nominated actor the celebrated Diane Ladd has died at the age of 89.

This actress, with credits included Chinatown, left this world in her residence at her Ojai, California home. The news was shared via an announcement from her daughter, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern, her daughter.

Dern, who starred with Diane Ladd in various films like Wild at Heart, described her as “my amazing hero plus my special gift of a mother”, noting that she was at her bedside during her final moments.

“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, star, artist and compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Beginnings and Major Success

Ladd’s early career featured small roles in TV shows like The Fugitive whereas the seventies featured her performing alongside actor Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

That very year, 1974, she performed with actress Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese acclaimed film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination as best supporting actress.

Subsequent Years

During the eighties, she starred in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story and comedy sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in the show Alice, a comedy program derived from the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the following decade, she was given an additional Oscar nomination for supporting actress Oscar nomination for her part in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the mother of her biological child the character played by Dern. The next year she was awarded another nomination for her role in Rambling Rose which included her daughter.

“This was the film that Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she flew me and Laura to England for a royal premiere and a celebration for us,” Ladd recalled of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, with tears, seeing us act.”

That decade also saw roles in humorous films Cemetery Club, a film joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, featuring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as the mother of Dern once more. The decade also brought her nominations for Emmy Awards for work in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She kept appearing alongside her daughter in comedy drama Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire and White’s satirical show Enlightened. She additionally starred alongside actress Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Subsequent TV appearances consisted of Ray Donovan, a drama and Young Sheldon.

Behind the Camera

Ladd also wrote and oversaw the humorous movie Mrs Munck, a film that included Diane Ladd and ex-husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “I was honored to direct him in a film. Actually, I stand as the only woman in recorded history to direct her ex-husband. I often joke: ‘I advise females, should you desire retribution, direct your ex-husband.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Personal Connections

Ladd was also the third cousin of playwright Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact on my life”.

In 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with lung disease and told she had just six months to live yet she recovered completely once her daughter transferred her to a new hospital.

“When you use your pain and not let it back up like a sore or something, instead use it to discover, to make the path clearer for yourself and others, then you are winning,” Ladd remarked.
