A large-scale search and recovery operation is currently under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing boats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Naval Search and Rescue Efforts Launched

The Mexican government has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than nine personnel, as stated by a official statement.

The ships had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the navy said.

Background of Aid to the Nation

The island nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation endures multiple national electricity failures.

"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort commented.

The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are collaborating completely with the officials and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Previous Aid Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the nation.

That vessel, called "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and food.

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to deliver essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.
